Spire Innovations is a subcontractor with Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. on a Materials Technology Corp. (MTC) team to develop next-generation active vibration control systems for rotorcraft. In Phase I Spire defined a control methodology and validated the concept in simulations developed by MTC and Sikorsky. Direct adaptive and indirect adaptive control methods were derived and successfully tailored to the unique requirements of the vibrational environment of interest. In Phase II Spire refined the control algorithm and conducted hardware-in-the-loop tests at Sikorsky’s active vibration test facility. Our design compared favorably to the production active vibration control system, and a Phase III program is currently underway to mature the technology and demonstrate in flight. SBIR Phase II “Innovative Methods for Optimally Mixing a Diverse Suite of Control Effectors for Marine Vehicles”. Under a subcontract to Barron Associates Inc., Spire Innovations developed a nonlinear control design methodology for manned and unmanned underwater vehicle with multiple diverse control effectors. This included the implementation of multi-input, multi-output backstepping controller and the development of an optimal control allocator that employed linear, quadratic, mixed integer linear, and piecewise linear programming techniques.
